Homeowner's Insurance
Basic homeowners insurance covers the following types of home losses and damages: smoke, thunderstorms, lightning, fire, burglary, defacement of property, civilian chaos, vehicle or aircraft damage, volcano eruptions and breaking of glass. More comprehensive policies that cover damage due to earthquakes, floods, ice, sleet, air conditioning and heating damage among others are also available. Condominium owners typically only have to insure what is on the inside (jewelry, electronics, appliances, etc.). Structural insurance (roof, outside and adjoining walls) should be provided by the condo association. Experts suggest insuring a home for no less than 80% of the purchase price. A lot is usually salvageable when fire destroys a home, so the owner may eliminate undamaged items from the claim. If the home is uninhabitable and the owner seeks shelter in a hotel, part or all of the lodging costs may be covered by the policy. Companies offer discounted policies for a variety of reasons. Purchasing a home and auto policy through one company, for instance, may save you 5-15%. Eastern U.S. residents living in brick houses, which typically are better able to withstand wind and hurricane damage than other kinds of housing, may also qualify for a discount. Similarly, frame homes in the western states often receive price-breaks due to their resistance to earthquake damage. Belonging to a business, alumni or other organization may also offer sizable savings because they purchase their policies in bulk.
