Coffee with the Council
Interested in learning more about local government?  Have "Coffee with the Council" on the third Saturday of each month.  Village residents are encouraged to participate in regular council meetings and workshops.

Abundance of Rich Agricultural Earth
The Potawatomi Indians were the first area residents.  In 1832 New Yorker Pierce Downer camped in a thick grove of oak trees in the middle of a prairie here.  Knowing that the fertile earth would make rich farmland, he staked out a claim to the land.  His son, Stephen Downer, set up camp on the south side of the grove.  Word of the abundance of rich agricultural earth within easy reach of Chicago spread quickly...and more settlers soon arrived.  By 1835 a school had been established and the Village of Downers Grove founded.  The community was incorporated in 1873.

  Passage to Freedom
The Chicago, Burlington and Quincy railroad connected Downers Grove to the rest of the country...but it's not the only railroad the community is known for.  Early settlers were abolitionists with powerful anti-slavery beliefs.  Their homes were safe havens for Chicago bound runaway slaves.  For many exhausted travelers, Downers Grove was the last stop on the Underground Railroad.
